Wood Castings, by Israeli designer Hilla Shamia, is a contemporary collection of furniture combining cast aluminium and wood. The design draws attention to the natural form of a tree trunk, which is incorporated into items such as side tables, coffee tables and benches.
The pieces are created through a process of pouring molten aluminium onto the rounded bark side of a tree trunk section. At the point where the two materials meet, the wood becomes charred and creates a stark contrast to the glistening metal. The section of tree trunk also splits in places, allowing the aluminium to run deeper into the wood and create a stronger join.
